Get to Know Animals Zoo in Epping, Essex, is facing serious allegations after reports emerged that staff were instructed to feed dead animals to the zoo’s snakes. This follows shocking incidents where the zoo’s pet dogs reportedly mauled and killed over ten guinea pigs and a rabbit named Rolo.
Donna Rose, the zoo’s owner, and her partner Rob Baxter are accused of mishandling the aftermath of these attacks. Former employees have claimed they were asked to dispose of the deceased animals by feeding them to the snakes, a practice they found troubling. Disturbed staff members walked out in protest, and their claims have been corroborated by multiple sources.
In addition to the disturbing claims about animal disposal, there are concerns about the welfare of the zoo’s animals and staff. Reports suggest the dogs responsible for the attacks were kept in inadequate conditions and had been aggressive towards staff. The zoo’s management has denied wrongdoing, admitting only that there was an “incident” involving the guinea pigs.
Authorities, including the RSPCA and Epping Forest District Council, are investigating the zoo’s practices. The zoo is required to have a specific license to feed animal carcasses to other animals, but records indicate they do not hold this license.
Experts stress the importance of post-mortems for deceased animals to ensure there are no health risks to other animals and to provide valuable information about their care. The situation at Get to Know Animals Zoo raises significant concerns about animal welfare and management practices.
