Former Zoo Animals Thrive at Texas Sanctuary

A group of former “zoo” animals now enjoy fulfilling lives at Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. Five years ago, these animals were rescued from the St. Edouard Zoo, an unaccredited facility in Canada, by Humane Society International. Their new home, part of the Humane Society of the United States, has provided them with the care and freedom they desperately needed.

Among the lucky inhabitants are tigers Serenity and Theodora, Douala the lioness, Zuko the zebra, and Wolfgang the wildebeest. The sanctuary is also home to kangaroos Ross, Rachel, and Joey, who have found comfort and space in their new surroundings.

At the St. Edouard Zoo, the animals lived in squalid conditions. The kangaroos were confined indoors, huddled together without sunlight. Douala, the lioness, displayed stress behaviors like pacing, and Zuko the zebra lived amid urine and feces. Wolfgang, the wildebeest, was one of the most stressed animals, kept in a cramped, dark stall. Today, these animals have undergone remarkable transformations. Serenity and Theodora, the tigers, enjoy splashing and swimming in their expansive enclosure. Wolfgang, once highly stressed, now peacefully resides next to Zuko, the zebra, with whom he has formed a tranquil neighborly bond.

Sue Tygielski, senior director of Black Beauty Ranch, reflects on their journey: “Five years ago, these animals were rescued from deplorable conditions, some in chewed-up, dark, dungeon-like stalls where they could barely move, while others were trying to dig out of their habitats. Here at Black Beauty, their lives changed in every way. They are receiving exceptional care, having their needs met, and are given the freedom to exhibit their natural behaviors and be the animals they deserve to be. They have become confident individuals able to flourish under our care. They will never face cruelty again.”

The transformation at Black Beauty Ranch is a testament to the power of compassion and proper care. These animals, once living in misery, now thrive in an environment that respects and nurtures their natural instincts.
