A couple, Timothy Miller, 79, and Carolyn Luke, 72, have been arrested on multiple charges of animal abuse. The arrest follows a disturbing discovery made by Boulder City Police on Friday, March 29th, after receiving a tip regarding a potential animal abuse and hoarding situation involving the suspects’ vehicle.
Upon intercepting the couple’s car near Nevada Way and Juniper Way, officers were immediately struck by a putrid smell emanating from within. What they encountered was truly distressing – inside the vehicle were found 51 guinea pigs and rabbits, crammed into unsuitable conditions. Tragically, eleven guinea pigs were already deceased, with an additional four perishing since the initial discovery.
Lt. Thomas Healing of the Boulder City Police Department described the appalling conditions inside the vehicle, with the animals confined to plastic totes amidst filthy surroundings. The intervention of Gina Greisen, president of the Nevada Voters For Animals, proved crucial in alerting authorities to the unfolding situation. Greisen followed the suspects’ vehicle, ensuring that justice would be pursued for the mistreated animals.
Subsequent investigations revealed further horrors. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department executed search warrants at the suspects’ residence and a hotel in Las Vegas, unearthing a shocking total of 30 dogs, ten of which had already succumbed to neglect. An additional 15 dogs and more guinea pigs were discovered at the couple’s house.
Aside from the immediate cruelty inflicted upon these innocent creatures, there are broader concerns regarding the financial burden of providing veterinary care for the surviving animals. Ann Inabnitt, Supervisor of Boulder City Animal Control, emphasized the urgent need for treatment, particularly as some of the animals were found to be pregnant.
Miller and Luke are currently facing 11 counts each of torture, injury, abandonment, or starvation of an animal, all considered misdemeanors due to being first-time offenses. However, further charges in Las Vegas could escalate to felony status. Presently detained at Henderson Detention Center, the couple appeared in court on Tuesday, where they were assigned new legal representation.
