In Broughton, Hampshire, about 50 dead hares along with a barn owl and a kestrel were discovered dumped outside the Broughton Community Shop earlier this month. The shocking discovery led to swift action by authorities, resulting in the arrest of a 37-year-old man from Totton on suspicion of multiple offenses.
The offenses the man is suspected of include various animal welfare and poaching violations, as well as a firearms-related offense. Hampshire & Isle of Wight Country Watch sergeant Stuart Ross emphasized the active pursuit of several lines of inquiry, highlighting the collaborative efforts with partner agencies to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The list of offenses the suspect faces is extensive, ranging from criminal damage to killing a Schedule 1 bird, all under the purview of different acts and regulations. Investigations conducted by Hampshire Constabulary unveiled that both the barn owl and kestrel had been shot with a firearm, triggering further legal implications as both species are protected under Schedule 1 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981.
The discovery of the dead animals, scattered outside the community shop, not only caused distress among the volunteers but also sparked outrage within the wider community, with images circulating on social media provoking public outcry. Mike Hensman, the shop treasurer, expressed the profound impact the incident had on the shop’s staff and volunteers, describing it as “devastating.” Conservationist Chris Packham condemned the act, labeling it as “horrific on so many levels.”
