Warren Michot, 71, of Opelousas, Louisiana was arrested on over 30 counts of cruelty to animals. The arrest came after authorities discovered Michot had been housing dozens of animals in appalling conditions at a former veterinary clinic just outside Opelousas.
The severity of the situation became apparent when Spencer Cornette, the St. Landry Parish investigator, disclosed that they seized a total of 38 animals from Michot’s care. Among them were 34 dogs and 4 goats, all of which were subjected to neglect and mistreatment.
The investigation was sparked by a tip from the director of the parish animal shelter, who raised concerns after Michot was hospitalized for health issues and left the animals unattended at the clinic. Instead of seeking assistance from the authorities or animal welfare organizations, Michot opted to avoid any intervention.
Cornette revealed the resistance they encountered upon attempting to intervene, stating that Michot adamantly refused access to the premises and hung up the phone when pressed for cooperation. However, their persistence paid off when they not only rescued the distressed animals but also gathered sufficient evidence to justify Michot’s arrest. Disturbingly, this isn’t the first time Michot has faced such charges. Cornette highlighted a previous incident in Thibodeaux, Louisiana, where Michot was arrested for similar offenses, having had over 100 Brittany Spaniels seized from him due to animal cruelty.
Despite Michot being released on bond following his latest arrest, the focus remains on the well-being of the animals he once held captive. Fortunately, the seized animals have found refuge at the St. Landry Parish animal shelter, where they will receive the care and attention they were so egregiously denied.
