The Bronx Zoo’s famous elephant, Happy, has not been seen publicly for over two weeks, raising concerns among animal rights activists and visitors. The zoo maintains that Happy is healthy but prefers to stay away from the public eye. However, some visitors and activists speculate there might be more to the story.
Tony, a Westchester resident, humorously suggested Happy could be hiding in someone’s backyard. Jossie, visiting from the Dominican Republic, joked that Happy might be on an errand for Patty, the zoo’s other elephant. But for Carlos Bonaparte, a father from East New York, the situation is more worrying, especially since both elephants are in their early 50s.
Zoo officials have issued statements assuring that Happy is in good health and simply choosing to stay out of sight. Despite these assurances, the Nonhuman Rights Project, an activist group monitoring the elephants, argues that Happy’s behavior is not typical of a healthy elephant. They have filed a complaint with the USDA, expressing concerns over Happy’s potential physical or psychological distress.
Visitors like Kilian Van Rijn from Georgia place their trust in the zoo’s staff, believing in their expertise and care for the animals. However, the mystery of Happy’s absence continues to stir debate and worry, especially in light of her past legal battles for freedom.
As temperatures soar in New York, some speculate the heat could be a factor in Happy’s reluctance to venture outside. The Bronx Zoo has yet to respond to inquiries about this possibility. Meanwhile, the discussion about Happy’s well-being underscores the broader issues of animal welfare and captivity.
