A young herring gull, named Fred, tragically succumbed to injuries after allegedly being attacked by children on Withernsea Beach in the United Kingdom. The incident occurred on July 29 when two young boys were seen hurling rocks at the defenseless bird. A concerned family intervened and later called for help, leading to Fred’s rescue by a volunteer who transported him to Ren’s Wildlife Hospital.
Despite initial signs of recovery, Fred’s condition worsened, and he passed away, likely due to internal injuries. Pamela Maunsell, the hospital’s founder, expressed her dismay over the incident and the challenges faced when confronting animal cruelty. The heartbreaking loss of Fred has sparked outrage and concern over the treatment of wildlife, especially as herring gulls are a protected species and are listed as endangered in the UK.
