Over 70 dogs found themselves trapped in an unimaginable plight on a property overseen by an animal rescue organization known as Second Paw Dog Rescue in Newton, Mississippi. Left alone in the elements for days, the poor canines endured hunger, thirst, and sickness, and more than a dozen lost their lives in the process. Thanks to the prompt and compassionate actions of the Newton County Sheriff’s Department and the Animal Rescue Corps, these dogs are now warm, safe, and dry, on their way to a brighter future.
It all began in July when the Newton County Sheriff’s Department received a disturbing complaint about the dogs’ living conditions on the property. Responding swiftly, deputies were met with a distressing sight as they discovered numerous dogs chained to trees, confined to cages outside, and wandering around the flooded and trash-covered landscape. It was evident that urgent intervention was necessary to save these innocent lives.
The sheriff’s department reached out to the Animal Rescue Corps, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to animal protection. Animal Rescue Corps immediately stepped into action, collaborating with other rescue partners to gather essential resources, equipment, vehicles, volunteers, and veterinarians. Their mission: to rescue and rehabilitate the dogs that had suffered for far too long.

Arriving at the property, the rescuers were confronted with a heartbreaking scene. The emaciated and tick-infested dogs bore witness to their prolonged suffering, having been deprived of food, clean water, and vital veterinary care. Tragically, some had already succumbed to their harsh existence.
The rescue operation, aptly named Operation Skin and Bones, was a joint effort involving the BISSELL Pet Foundation, the Newton County Sheriff’s Department, and the Animal Rescue Corps. Their united determination allowed them to successfully save the surviving dogs and provide them with immediate medical attention.
Transported to the Animal Rescue Corps’ Rescue Center in Gallatin, Tennessee, the canines received comprehensive medical examinations, vaccinations, and treatments for any pre-existing health issues. This much-needed care marked the beginning of their journey toward recovery and a chance at a new life.

Once the dogs have regained their health and strength, Animal Rescue Corps plans to collaborate with other rescue organizations to find loving forever homes for each one of them. This act of kindness and dedication ensures that these resilient animals will have the opportunity to experience love and care, something they were unjustly denied for too long.
While the operators of Second Paw Dog Rescue have been charged with six counts of felony animal cruelty, it is essential not to rush to judgment. Rescuers, like Michael Cunningham of the Animal Rescue Corps, advocate for a broader perspective on animal welfare. Cunningham reminds us that the responsibility lies with all of us to address the issue of homeless animals, which burden countless shelters nationwide. The fate of these mistreated dogs is a stark reminder of the countless others still awaiting their chance to be rescued and embraced by a loving family.
Despite the tragedy and suffering witnessed during this, hope shines through in the form of the resilient spirits of the rescued dogs. Their sweet and affectionate personalities, even amid their ordeal, have left rescuers like Cunningham optimistic about their future. In the arms of dedicated caretakers, these dogs are now relishing their newfound safety and comfort.
