GUIDE: Healthy Alkaline Foods to Include in Your Diet

What is Alkalinity?

The alkaline diet is a system of eating based on the belief that certain foods leave an alkaline residue, or ash, in the body. Foods are classified as alkaline, neutral, or acidic based on their pH. Alkaline foods are those that have a positive pH.

Proponents of a high-alkaline diet believe this style of eating can improve digestion and help prevent cancer, osteoporosis, allergies, obesity, and fatigue, among other conditions, but scientific evidence to support these claims is lacking.

Although the scientific jury is still out, many so-called alkaline foods are undeniably some of the healthiest around, and testimonials for this style of eating abound. It certainly can’t hurt to eat more green vegetables, legumes, avocados, and seeds, and favor natural sweeteners like stevia and blackstrap molasses, while limiting or avoiding animal products, refined sugars, and alcohol.

Check out the guide below for a list of some of the healthiest alkaline foods to incorporate in your diet!

Alkaline Foods:

Fruit: Avocado, Coconut (fresh), Figs, Lemon, Lime, Sour Cherries, Tomato, Watermelon
Vegetables: Asparagus, Bok Choy, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Cucumber, Green Beans, Kale, Lettuce, Onion, Peas, Peppers, Spinach, Squash, Wheat Grass, Zucchini

Other: Stevia, Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking Soda, Blackstrap Molasses, Grasses (Wheat, Barley, Kamut, Alfalfa, etc.)

Acidic Foods:

Interestingly, some of the most acidic foods are also those that have been found to be health-compromising for other reasons. Some of the worst offenders include:

  1. Beef, chicken, pork, fish
  2. Eggs, cheese
  3. Artificial sweeteners, cane sugar, beet sugar
  4. Soy sauce, vinegar, ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, butter, margarine
  5. Black tea, beer, wine, coffee, liquor
  6. Peanuts, pistachios, cashews
  7. Chocolate, white bread

Hey I know this is off topic but I was wondering if you knew of any widgets I could add to my
blog that automatically tweet my newest twitter updates.

I’ve been looking for a plug-in like this for quite some time and was hoping maybe you would have some experience with something like this. Please let me know if you run into anything. I truly enjoy reading your blog and I look forward to your new updates.

I started eating this way after being told by my doctor that I’d need to be on antibiotics year ’round. I’ve been off of them for almost a year now without infection. I’m a believer and in addition to the above foods, drink a lot of coconut water.
