India maintains a long-standing connection to animals, and in many ways, it leads the way in Animal rights. It was the first Asian nation to ban cosmetics animal testing. It has also banned bullfights, bullock-cart races, and the use of elephants in circuses, and just this month, it banned the import of reptile, chinchilla, mink and fox fur.

The country also has laws to protect street animals, including thousands upon thousands of free-roaming dogs. These dogs are homeless, but not necessarily abandoned. They often descend from generations of free-roaming dogs born on the streets of India’s cities and villages, and the country grants them constitutional rights to live where they were born.

Unfortunately, not all cities and villages have the resources or know-how to care for all these dogs when they become injured or sick, nor to feed their constant hunger. That’s where organizations like Indigree Angels Trust come in. Based in Delhi, India, Indigree Angels Trust is a national non-profit organization dedicated to caring for these canines in a number of ways.

Representatives and volunteers from the Trust take to the streets of Delhi daily to monitor the condition of the city’s street dogs.

They pack the Trust van with food and supplies so that they can care for these dogs in whatever capacity is needed.

This includes scores of prepared meal packets to feed the dogs’ hunger.

Some stops greet packs of dogs who are happy to enjoy a meal together.

Other stops serve more solitary souls who take comfort in the kindness of a loving human hand.

The Trust also treats and rehabilitates dogs with medical conditions such as mange, scabies, and other infections…

…and brings in professional veterinary care to return these dogs back to good health.

Vaccinations and sterilizations are also administered to improve overall health and well-being on the streets.

In addition, the Trust organizes adoptions to re-home these dogs, and it provides new owners with plenty of training and tips to ensure everyone involved can enjoy a happy new life.

All in all, this group is making the streets of Delhi a kinder, safer place for these canines.

The Trust helps over 10,000 dogs per month and works tirelessly to raise national awareness of the plight these dogs face on a daily basis, all of which requires substantial resources. You can help by sharing this message, encouraging a kinder world for dogs both at home and abroad, and by contributing and volunteering with the Indigree Angel Trust.

  1. If I and known about them I would have given them money but gave to Animal Aid, also a wonderful group. This month was the year anniversary of a dog who I took care of for five years. His person is from India and the dog\’s name was Sachin. I thought that instead of trying to find something for Sunil, his person, I would give some money to a rescue. there. Sadly when the time come sot give them money I am sure they will still be in need of it. What a great thing they are doing. I know the dogs of India are in good hands even if they are still without homes.
