Additionally, Indian chefs are big fans of yogurt sauces and creamy milk-based curries.  So what is a person who is trying to leave meat and dairy off their plate to do? Well, as with anything in life, if you want something done, sometimes you just have to do it yourself!

So first, let’s talk about meat, or rather meat substitutes. The lamb and chicken used in many Indian dishes can easily be replaced with seitan or seasoned tofu. After all, the main reason people opt for Indian food is not necessarily for the meat, but for their amazing use of spices! And what are seitan and tofu if not amazing flavor absorbers? Just let them marinate in spices like cardamom, cumin, or caraway, and voila! Authentic Indian flavah.

As for the dairy components of dishes, there are plenty of alternatives you can use. Whether it’s coconut milk kefir, almond milk, or cashew, your dishes will come out just as creamy as the traditional versions, if not more! Tofu cubes are also a seamless replacement for paneer, India’s traditional homemade cheese.

And sometimes, you don’t even have to replace anything! Indian cuisine is chock full of vegan-friendly foods like lentils, chickpeas, spinach, potatoes, cauliflower, and peas.
