There’s more reason to stay away from eggs. In late December 2019, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) were investigating a listeria outbreak linked to hardboiled eggs. The eggs were produced by Almark Foods and a nation-wide recall has been issued.

Four people have been hospitalized and one person has been reported dead in Texas. The outbreak has been found in five states, with seven people reportedly infected. Infected people are reportedly in South Carolina, Maine, Texas, Florida and Pennsylvania.  Hard-boiled eggs and egg products have been recalled from the Georgia company Almark.

The CDC is warning people not to eat purchased hard-boiled eggs or hard-boiled egg products of any kind, including egg salad. According to CBS, the recall includes large retailers including Walmart, Trader Joe’s, Costco, Kroger and ShopRite. All products with a “Best if Used By Date” that begin with G should not be eaten, according to the FDA. Listeriosis is treated by antibiotics and usually includes symptoms like stiff neck, confusion, convulsions, muscle aches and fever.

Eating eggs is harmful for other reasons too. Eggs have long been linked to poor factory farm conditions. The treatment of hens and chickens in factory farms is dangerous and abusive.
