Fast food chains around the world have been adding plant-based options to their restaurants, but one of the most famous — McDonald’s has been late to join the party. Kentucky Fried Chicken tested out vegan fried chicken made with Beyond Meat. Burger King even tested and expanded a meatless whopper made with the Impossible burger. McDonald’s has only ever added very few vegan options — they launched a vegan happy meal in Sweden and tested a meatless burger named ‘McAloo Tikki‘ in one location in the United States. But this will be the first time they actually launch a plant-based option in North America that may compete with the options appearing on menus at competing fast food chains.

McDonald’s will be testing burgers made with Beyond Meat in Ontario, Canada starting on Monday, September 30th! The burger will be cleverly called the PLT (short for plant, lettuce, and tomato). The patty was exclusively created for McDonald’s by Beyond Meat. The test will last for 10 weeks and will be available in 28 locations in Southwestern Ontario for $6.49 CAD plus tax.


The burger is free of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. McDonald’s VP of Global Menu Strategy, Ann Wahlgren said in a press release, “McDonald’s has a proud legacy of fun, delicious and craveable food—and now, we’re extending that to a test of a juicy, plant-based burger. We’ve been working on our recipe and now we’re ready to hear feedback from our customers.”

You do need a food processor for this, but not much else.
