To the casual observer, it might have looked like fast-food icon, McDonald’s was lagging stubbornly behind the times. Other burger chains like White Castle, and Carl’s Jr. have welcomed plant-based eaters by partnering with vegan startups to offer their classic patties with a plant-based twist. As their competitors forged ahead, the red-haired clown dragged squeaky heels.
Recently, though, the Golden Arches have been getting greener.
After rolling out vegan burgers in India and the UK, McDonald’s Sweden announced they will begin serving their own vegan happy meal which comes with the McFalafel. As the name suggests, the McFalafel is made from ground chickpeas and mild spices. It can be ordered as a sandwich and in smaller happy meal form for plant-based kids. According to Brand Eating, customers ordering the McFalafel can choose from two new side dips: a dairy-based yogurt sauce or vegan pepper dip.
For plant-based eaters, news like this causes a wide range of reactions. Much as they court vegan eaters, fast food giants still contribute to obesity and put unsustainable strain on the planet. Others will almost certainly view this news as a sign of changing times, a happy harbingers of bright things to come. While mention of McDonald’s might inflame, this infectious optimism is hard to ignore. Plenty of fast food executives have already defected to the plant-based revolution already. Love or hate fast food, there’s no denying they will have to adapt, or face the consequences.

Jean-Philippe Cyr‘s yummy Herby Chickpea Burgers are crispy like falafel, herby like falafel. Essentially, they’re everything you love about falafel sandwiched between two hamburger buns with all the dressings. Chickpeas are blended with fresh parsley, almonds, sun-dried tomatoes, and herbs, then fried to make them crispy. These burgers would be amazing paired with vegan tzatziki sauce and sweet potato fries.
