McDonald’s has introduced an exciting new trial in the UK, showcasing its commitment to expanding vegan-friendly options. The fast-food giant is now offering a “deliciously smooth and creamy” vegan ice cream named the Vegan Scoop. Available in two delightful flavors, Choco and Strawberry, the Vegan Scoop is served in a tub similar to the popular McFlurry and priced at £1.59. This new dessert has earned certification from The Vegetarian Society as a vegan product, though McDonald’s cautions it may not be suitable for those with milk allergies due to being manufactured in a facility that processes dairy.
The Vegan Scoop is being trialed at 52 locations across the North West of England, including several restaurants in Manchester and Stockport. This trial period will last until September 3, with the potential for a nationwide launch next year, depending on customer reception.
In addition to the Vegan Scoop, McDonald’s is testing another vegan-friendly frozen treat called the McFreezy. This dessert is crafted from frozen fruit juice and puree, and offered in two refreshing flavors: orange and mango & pineapple. The McFreezy is available in 187 restaurants in the North West, as well as selected locations in the Republic of Ireland, also until September 3.
This trial follows McDonald’s previous success with vegan ice creams in Germany, where vegan chocolate McFlurry and McSundae have become permanent fixtures since their 2022 launch. However, these products have yet to be introduced in other markets.
In the UK, McDonald’s already offers a variety of vegan choices. These include the McPlant, featuring a Beyond Meat patty, the Vegetable Deluxe, and Veggie Dippers. Since its introduction in 2021, the McPlant has seen significant popularity, especially in Ireland.
As McDonald’s continues to expand its vegan offerings, these new frozen desserts could mark the beginning of more widespread plant-based options in the future. For those interested in trying the Vegan Scoop, a list of participating locations can be found on McDonald’s website.
