In countries where wealth is not as prevalent as the Western World, relying on meat for protein can be dangerous: Less nutritional education means it’s hard to know what other foods to put into your body, meaning when you can’t afford meat, you can’t afford protein.
More and more, ethical companies like Beyond Meat have turned their attention to combating hunger, and meat’s larger role in food insecurity. These companies are exploring market-based solutions for global health and nutrition that world leaders have, so far, been unable to address.
Infinite Foods has developed a new, low-cost alternative to meat in South Africa. The country has already warmed to the Beyond Burger, and now Impossible foods hopes their product can become popular with a broader market.
South Africa struggles with rising meat prices leading to less and less meat making into people’s diets. Infinite foods believes they can change the status quo. The once catch? Their burger has to taste the same, or better, than meat products, says Founder and CEO Michelle Adelman. As vegan meats become more popular in the higher-income parts of society, over the next three years the cost will be able to decline enough for more people to afford to take better care of themselves.
Of course, you can build your own vegan burger in the comfort of your own home! Check out these recipes, courtesy of the Food Monster App.
