Europe’s food and farming sectors have reached a pivotal agreement on the need to reduce meat consumption, aiming to balance agricultural practices with environmental goals. In a recent report developed after seven months of dialogue among farming lobbies, green groups, and other stakeholders, there is a clear call for urgent reform in how Europeans produce and consume food.
The report highlights the necessity of rebalancing diets, suggesting that Europeans currently eat more animal protein than is recommended by scientists. To shift toward plant-based diets, it suggests better education, stricter marketing regulations, and voluntary buyouts for regions dependent on intensive livestock farming.
To Support this transition, the report proposes the creation of a “just transition fund” aimed at helping farmers adopt more sustainable practices. Additionally, the reform of EU agricultural subsidies, which currently favor large-scale farms, is suggested to prioritize those who need Support the most.
While animal agriculture is a significant contributor to Climate change and habitat destruction, European leaders have yet to take aggressive action. However, the report encourages policymakers to promote plant-based diets through measures such as free school meals and tax incentives on sustainable food products. Despite some concerns from farming groups, the overall vision is seen as a balanced and necessary step toward a more sustainable future for both farmers and the environment.
