Ultra processed foods are in nearly every aisle of the grocery store and now a sweeping new scientific review is sounding the alarm about just how much harm they may be doing. According to reporting by The Guardian, researchers behind a major Lancet series warn that these industrial products are linked to adverse effects in every major organ system and represent a growing threat to global health.
The papers outline how ultra processed items like packaged snacks, soft drinks, ready meals and cereals have replaced traditional meals and fresh produce in diets around the world. The review examined more than one hundred long term studies and found strong associations between high UPF intake and obesity, heart disease, type two diabetes and even depression. The researchers highlight that these foods are engineered for taste and convenience, often loaded with additives, artificial flavors and other substances that do not Support long term health. They are also pushed aggressively by global corporations whose marketing strategies steer families away from fresh and minimally processed options. In the US and UK more than half of the average diet now comes from ultra processed foods and for many low income or younger people that number reaches eighty percent.
Scientists involved in the review argue that humans may not be biologically adapted to consume these heavily altered products and warn that delaying action will only deepen the global chronic disease burden.
