A Cheshire woman has been banned from keeping animals for five years after her pet French bulldog, Peanut, was found severely emaciated. The incident occurred when RSPCA inspector Jenny Bethel responded to a call at Claire Kirton’s residence in Crewe in August 2023.
Upon arrival, Inspector Bethel was met with a distressing sight. Peanut’s condition was dire—her hips, ribs, and spine were alarmingly visible, indicating severe malnourishment. Weighing only 6.7kg, Peanut scored one out of nine on a body condition scale, indicating an emaciated state. Additionally, she suffered from muscle loss, a flea infestation, ear lesions, overgrown nails, and was anemic.
It was clear Peanut’s condition was a result of prolonged neglect. Kirton, 46, claimed to have owned Peanut for only five weeks and argued that the dog was already “skinnier” when she acquired her. However, she admitted to not seeking veterinary care for Peanut despite her deteriorating condition.
In a hearing at Cheshire Magistrates Court, Kirton pleaded guilty to two offenses under the Animal Welfare Act 2006. As a consequence, she was banned from keeping animals for five years and received a 12-month community order mandating 100 hours of unpaid work. Kirton was also ordered to pay court costs and a victim surcharge. Inspector Bethel expressed her dismay at Kirton’s neglectful actions, stating, “The defendant didn’t do anything to help this poor dog.” Despite Kirton’s claims of daily feeding, Peanut’s condition deteriorated significantly due to inadequate care.
Fortunately, Peanut’s story has a silver lining. Following her rescue, she received treatment for fleas and worms, was placed on a feeding plan, and gained 3.6kg in less than two months. With the diligent care provided by the RSPCA, Peanut made a remarkable recovery. She has since been placed in foster care and found a loving new parent.
