Wildlife Trust is Hiring “Seal Sitters”

The Manx Wildlife Trust (MWT) protects seal pups along the picturesque coastline of the Isle of Man. Now, they are looking for people who want to join their team and become ‘seal sitters‘.

Seal Sitters play a pivotal role in ensuring the well-being of seal pups that frequent the shores of the Isle of Man. These dedicated volunteers observe and monitor the seals, providing vital assistance to distressed or injured pups. According to Marine Wildlife Officer Lara Howe, seal pups often find themselves in precarious situations, particularly on beaches that are less than suitable for their needs. Harsh weather conditions, compounded by strong winds, pose significant challenges for these vulnerable animals. The need for human intervention becomes apparent as nature’s elements take their toll.

The data collected by the MWT shows the invaluable contribution of volunteers to marine conservation efforts. Each observation, each act of kindness towards these seals, helps the entire ecosystem.

Volunteers must possess a ‘strong stomach,’ as they engage in the collection of data, even from deceased animals. This data is instrumental in the Cetacean Strandings Investigation Programme, spearheaded by the Zoological Society of London. Through meticulous research, scientists can unravel the mysteries surrounding the cause of death, disease, contaminations, and reproductive patterns.
