Whole Foods Has Gone Above and Beyond to Protect Goose Who Laid Eggs in Parking Lot

Every plant-based eater or even those that don’t eat 100 percent plant-based, know that Whole Foods is an awesome place to shop. You automatically feel healthier just being there, let’s be honest. And now Whole Foods has given us another reason to love them: they are helping a mother goose who recently laid eggs in their parking lot!

At the Whole Foods in Littleton, Colorado, there is a creek across from the store and two geese came over to the Whole Foods parking lot. “We just came in one day, and we saw two geese just kind of hovered around this area. Wasn’t really sure what she was up to. She just hung out there for the first day, and noticed she was building a nest,” Tony Nemec, the store’s team leader, told WCSH.

A day later, the mother goose laid her eggs right by the front door. Staff called Parks and Wildlife to figure out what the next best step would be and they said to leave the mother there with her eggs, unbothered. “They assured us that the best thing to do was just to leave her alone … and maybe put a barricade around them, and that’s what we did. Maybe she knows we’re going to take care of her,” Nemec said.

The Whole Foods team set up a barricade around the mother goose and her eggs. They even fill a kiddie pool for her to swim in every day. Other customers have been bringing out corn and greens for her to eat. 

The kind caretakers even put out a caution sign to ensure the safety of the mother and her eggs. So sweet!

The Whole Foods team expects the babies to be born on or around May 5th and if the mother does want to cross the street to take her babies to the river, there is a plan in place.

“I’m pretty excited to see the baby goose running around the parking lot. We’re hoping they’ll be safe. We have the police and animal control on call, so if she needs to cross Wadsworth with her little ones, they’ll guide her through. They’ve already agreed to that,” Nemec said.

Although this is the first year they’ve had a goose build a nest in their parking lot, a few goose experts have told Whole Foods that if the mother is comfortable with that area, she will come back for decades to nest. It seems like the staff has done a great job making sure the family is safe, so we can only hope this becomes a tradition!

Just when it seems no one cares about wildlife, we see people work together to help animals, putting their little lives above the hustle and bustle of business and commerce.
