A new warning from the UK’s Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has raised concerns over a wave of unexpected pregnancies linked to popular weight-loss drugs such as Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. According to The Guardian, the MHRA has received 40 reports of pregnancy in patients using these medications.
These drugs, sometimes referred to as “skinny jabs,” are often prescribed to manage weight in people with obesity or type 2 diabetes. Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide, which mimics a hormone that increases insulin, curbs appetite, and slows digestion. Mounjaro, made with tirzepatide, goes a step further by acting on two hormones involved in appetite and blood sugar control.
The problem? These medications may interfere with oral contraceptives, especially in people with higher body weight. In fact, 26 of the 40 pregnancy-related reports were linked specifically to Mounjaro. The MHRA is now urging women taking these medications to use barrier methods like condoms—and to avoid trying to get pregnant while on them or shortly after stopping.
Surprisingly, some women are reporting pregnancies not long after beginning the medication—likely because weight loss can increase fertility, and the drugs may reduce the absorption of the pill by slowing stomach emptying.
Experts say the guidance is a necessary reminder that these drugs are not harmless or purely cosmetic. Dr. Alison Cave of the MHRA stated clearly: these are not quick-fix beauty hacks—they are powerful medications meant for specific health conditions.
If you’re considering weight-loss drugs, make informed decisions. Talk to a trusted doctor, avoid shortcuts, and consider the root causes—often environmental, societal, and dietary—of obesity. Choosing plant-based, whole-food diets can Support sustainable weight and fertility goals, without unexpected consequences.
