A new study suggests that a daily dose of vitamin D might help keep your cells younger for longer. According to Earth.com, a long-term investigation involving older adults found that vitamin D3 supplements helped preserve telomere length — the protective caps on the ends of chromosomes — which play a key role in how our cells age.

The study, led by Dr. JoAnn Manson of Mass General Brigham, followed participants over five years. Men aged 50 and older and women aged 55 and older were given either 2,000 IU of vitamin D3 daily or a placebo. Researchers measured the length of their telomeres at multiple intervals using a precise DNA technique known as quantitative PCR.

Results showed that those who took vitamin D had slower telomere shortening than those who did not. That may not sound exciting, but telomeres are like biological timekeepers—when they shrink, it increases the risk of age-related diseases. The difference in telomere length could equate to nearly three extra years of cellular youth.

The same study tested omega-3 fatty acid supplements too, but those didn’t produce a meaningful effect on telomeres.

Vitamin D has also been linked to lower inflammation levels, which may offer additional anti-aging benefits. However, experts stress that it’s not a miracle cure. People who eat vitamin D-rich foods or spend time in the sun may not need supplements. Still, for many, especially those on plant-based diets, vitamin D supplementation could be a helpful addition.
