A recent review of clinical trial data suggests that drugs like Ozempic could lower the risk of dementia in people with type 2 diabetes. As reported by Ed Cara at Gizmodo, researchers in Ireland found that GLP-1 drugs, including semaglutide (the active ingredient in Ozempic and Wegovy), were associated with a significantly reduced risk of dementia when compared to other treatments.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a hormone that regulates blood sugar and appetite. Originally designed to treat diabetes and obesity, they are now showing potential brain benefits too. This latest meta-analysis, published in JAMA Neurology, looked at 23 trials involving around 160,000 volunteers. While the researchers did not find a clear link between all glucose-lowering drugs and dementia prevention, they discovered that GLP-1 drugs stood out from the rest.

Scientists believe that these drugs might protect the brain by reducing inflammation or improving cell communication, although more research is needed to confirm exactly how it works. Encouraged by the findings, pharmaceutical company Novo Nordisk has already launched large-scale trials to see if semaglutide can prevent early Alzheimer’s disease. Results from these trials are expected next year.

While the idea of using a weight-loss drug to protect the brain may seem unusual, it reflects how interconnected health truly is. Reducing the risk of major illnesses often starts with better daily choices — for ourselves and the planet.

If protecting your brain can begin with what you eat and how you live, why not take it a step further? Embracing a plant-based lifestyle not only supports your own health but also reduces harm to animals and the environment. Every small change matters. Let’s create a world that’s healthier, kinder, and greener — starting with what’s on our plates.
