A new study highlights how adopting a plant-based diet can benefit postmenopausal women by easing hot flashes and promoting weight loss. Researchers from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine examined the effects of plant-based eating in a study involving 84 women, all experiencing frequent moderate-to-severe hot flashes. Participants were split into two groups: one following a low-fat vegan diet that included daily soybeans, and the other maintaining their regular eating habits for 12 weeks.
The analysis revealed significant improvements in the vegan group. Severe hot flashes dropped by 92%, while the control group saw little change. Weight loss was another notable result, with the vegan group losing an average of 8 pounds compared to just half a pound in the control group.
Interestingly, the research found that even plant-based foods considered “unhealthy” by dietary standards—such as refined grains and fruit juices—contributed to weight loss and fewer hot flashes when they replaced meat and dairy. These findings align with the idea that plant-based foods, whether “healthy” or not, are often lower in fat and calories than animal products.
“Simply replacing meat and dairy products with plant-based foods can lead to weight loss and a reduction in hot flashes in postmenopausal women,” explains Dr. Hana Kahleova, co-author of the study. She adds that even so-called “unhealthy” plant-based foods are a better choice for addressing issues like type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and other diet-related conditions.
