Staying hydrated is essential for maintaining a healthy lifestyle. However, many people struggle to meet their daily water intake goals. Enter #WaterTok, a trending TikTok hashtag that encourages users to experiment with low- or zero-sugar flavor packets and “skinny” syrups to create unique, calorie-conscious water-based beverages. With over 97 million views, these sweet concoctions, including banana split, Skittles, and cotton candy flavors, are gaining popularity among those looking to lose weight and stay hydrated.

Tonya Spanglo, a TikTok influencer with over 774,000 followers, started the #WaterTok trend after undergoing gastric sleeve surgery. Struggling to meet her daily water intake goal, she turned to flavored water as a replacement for her unhealthy soda habit. Today, she drinks 90 ounces of water daily and shares her creative recipes with her followers.

While the #WaterTok trend has garnered a large following, it has also sparked controversy. Critics argue that these flavored beverages are more akin to juice or diet soda due to their sweeteners. Artificial sweeteners, such as sucralose, aspartame, and saccharin, are used in these low- or zero-sugar drinks to maintain flavor without adding calories. However, recent research has linked artificial sweeteners to health problems like an increased risk of heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Nutritionist Michelle Blum cautions that these syrups, while low in calories, fat, and sugar, contain controversial ingredients similar to diet soda.

Despite the controversy, many people have found #WaterTok to be life-changing. For those trying to lose weight or cut back on sugar, these flavored water alternatives may be a necessity. Spanglo acknowledges that she isn’t a physician or nutritionist and encourages her followers to consult professionals with any concerns.

As the #WaterTok trend continues to gain traction, it’s important to weigh the potential health benefits and risks. If you’re interested in trying these low-calorie flavored waters, consider speaking with a healthcare professional for personalized guidance. And remember, staying hydrated is essential for a healthy lifestyle – whether you choose to add a little flavor or stick to plain water. So, why not raise a glass (or a tumbler) to better health and hydration?
