The global fight against climate change is facing a pivotal moment, with leading UN climate expert Elisa Morgera urging for a complete transformation of current strategies. In a recent interview, Morgera criticized the effectiveness of existing international efforts, highlighting that misinformation and bad faith actors are significantly hindering progress toward averting a climate catastrophe.
Morgera, the UN special rapporteur on Climate change, pointed out that annual UN climate summits, known as COP, are often dominated by powerful interests promoting misleading narratives and technological “fixes.” These distractions divert attention from equitable solutions needed by countries that are least responsible for and most affected by Climate change. “The current climate regime locks in an ineffective approach, blind to the disproportionate harms and benefits,” Morgera stated, emphasizing that some states are not acting in good faith, thereby excluding truth and transparency from crucial climate discussions.
A major concern raised by Morgera is the limited participation of Indigenous experts and local communities in COP negotiations. This exclusion prevents the inclusion of culturally driven solutions and the lived experiences of those most impacted by Climate change. She advocates for open sessions at COP, greater transparency regarding corporate interests, and the integration of diverse knowledge systems to foster meaningful climate action.
Despite nearly three decades of climate summits, Morgera notes that significant progress remains elusive. The relentless expansion of fossil fuels continues, making it increasingly unlikely to keep Global warming below the critical 1.5°C threshold. Extreme weather events, such as wildfires, droughts, and floods, are intensifying, disproportionately affecting regions that contribute the least to global greenhouse gas emissions.
As the international court of justice prepares a historic advisory opinion on state obligations to tackle Climate change, Morgera calls for transformative change and accountability from high-emitting nations. She warns that without genuine commitment and transparency, the global climate fight will remain ineffective and unjust.
