Most of us have a drawer full of old phones and tablets. They sit there for years. Meanwhile, the planet keeps paying for new mining and new waste.

Costco is offering a simple way to clear that clutter and get value back. According to Costco, its trade in program can provide a Digital Costco Shop Card based on your device and its condition, with quoted values up to $2,550.

The process is straightforward. First, you select your device model online and answer a few questions. Then you print a shipping label, or request a box with prepaid supplies. After that, you follow the instructions to erase your device and send it in.

Costco says the device gets inspected, data wiped, and given a new life. That matters because keeping electronics in circulation can lower demand for raw materials. It can also reduce harm to wildlife when mining and dumping poison water and soil.

Still, do a little prep. Back up your files, remove cases, and wipe the device before shipping. Also compare offers. Best Buy and Target also run trade in programs that pay out gift cards.

If your quote comes back low, consider repair first. A battery swap can keep a phone useful for another year. You can also hand it down to family, or Donate to a local nonprofit.

Either way, reuse beats tossing tech in the trash. Less electronic waste means fewer toxic leaks into communities, and that supports cleaner air on Earth too.

And when you turn that credit into groceries, you can make a choice that supports your health and the environment. Try putting more beans, grains, and vegetables in your cart for a simple plant based week. Keep pushing for a future where reuse and plant based food feel normal.
