Seine

In a recent turn of events, the first triathlon training session in the Seine, scheduled for Sunday morning, was abruptly canceled due to unsatisfactory water quality levels. This decision has left many athletes in a state of uncertainty as they await improvements before Tuesday’s men’s race.

The heavy rainfall that Paris has experienced since the opening ceremony is cited as the primary cause of the declining water conditions. The scheduled “familiarisation” session on Monday also hangs in the balance, with a decision expected at 4 am local time. Should this session too be canceled, it will leave competitors without any practice in the Seine before their races.

The priority remains the health and safety of the athletes, as stated by both Paris 2024 and World Triathlon. A meeting involving major stakeholders including representatives from Paris 2024, World Triathlon, Météo France, and the local authorities resulted in the unanimous decision to cancel the swim segment of the triathlon. Despite the cancellation, other segments like running and biking will proceed as planned.

Organizers remain hopeful that the upcoming races, including the women’s race on Wednesday, will occur on schedule. Typically, water quality in the Seine has been observed to normalize approximately 36 hours after the cessation of rain. The current weather forecast, which predicts a cessation of rain, supports this outlook.

Since 2015, significant efforts and investments approximating £1 billion have been directed towards improving the water quality of the Seine. These improvements are part of a broader initiative to not only prepare the river for the Olympics but also to restore its condition for the residents of Paris post-Games. The comprehensive plan includes the construction of a large underground water storage basin in central Paris, enhancements to the sewer system, and upgrades to wastewater treatment facilities.

This concerted effort to rejuvenate the Seine underlines the commitment to environmental sustainability and public health, ensuring that Paris can host major international events while safeguarding natural resources and community well-being.
