To demonstrate the cleanliness of the River Seine ahead of the 2024 Olympics, France’s sports minister, Amelie Oudea-Castera, swam in the iconic waterway. Joined by Paralympic triathlon champion Alexis Hanquinquant, Oudea-Castera’s dive aimed to dispel Pollution concerns and reassure the public about the river’s safety for the upcoming games.
The swim took place near the Alexandre III and Invalides bridges in Paris, with Oudea-Castera sharing a video of the event on social media. Her post, featuring the hashtag “Promise kept!” and a swimmer emoji, highlighted the significance of the moment. Hanquinquant, who won gold at Tokyo 2020, celebrated alongside the minister, emphasizing their commitment to ensuring a safe and clean environment for athletes.
The Seine is set to host the triathlon and marathon swimming events during the Olympics, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, and the Paralympics, from August 28 to September 8. To further Support this initiative, French President Emmanuel Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo have pledged to take their own swims in the river, aiming to boost confidence among citizens and visitors.
Despite this high-profile endorsement, concerns about water quality persist. Mayor Hidalgo initially planned to swim last month but postponed due to political tensions following snap legislative elections. She now promises to dive in the coming days, asserting that the water is safe.
Recent tests showed fluctuating levels of E. coli, with some days recording unsafe contamination levels. However, new results indicate an improvement, and officials maintain optimism about the river’s suitability for Olympic events. Christophe Dubi of the International Olympic Committee expressed confidence, stating, “We are confident that we will swim in the Seine this summer.” Efforts to clean the Seine have involved a €1.4 billion investment, and while challenges remain, the authorities’ commitment to showcasing a clean and safe river is clear.
