Otis the otter was struggling in the water, fighting for his life, when a couple of sailors noticed him and stopped to help. An eagle had swooped down and tried to attack poor Otis until these sailors saved the day.

With no mother or siblings in sight, they brought him to safety since he was too small and exhausted to be out in open water all by himself and at risk for another attack.

The kind sailors brought Otis to the nearest animal shelter, where he took a well-needed nap after using all of his energy to swim for his life.

Otis is only was only a couple of months old when he was rescued, so he would normally be dependent on his mother. The team has tried to replicate a similar experience of nourishment and care as best they can to make him feel at home.

“Flash forward one week and now he is more active, eating a lot of salmon every day. Otters are very social animals so Otis needs lots of cuddles since he does not have his original family with him,” said the animal shelter.

For the next few months, he’ll spend his days at the animal shelter hanging out with the other rescue animals at the center!

Thanks to the kind sailors who went out of their way to help an animal in need, baby Otis will be released back into the wild where he belongs in 4-6 months once he is old enough to be out on his own.
