Award-winning architect Yuji Yamazaki agreed to design the Kudadoo Maldives Private Island in the Maldives and worked extremely hard to make it a sustainable resort.

He ran into many problems building a sustainable resort in the low-lying country. The resort opened in 2018 and is made up of 15 overwater homes. While constructing, he tried to use as few natural resources as possible while showcasing the island’s immaculate beauty.
His first step was to make sure that the resort could use clean energy. While many places in the Maldives use solar power, Yamazaki reportedly did not like how they tried to hide the panels as if they were shameful. He and his team decided to design the panels and include them in the overall aesthetic.
“We decided to just design one large public building with the solar power roof,” Yamazaki says. “In terms of calculation of the power, that was enough scale footage to cover or supply the electricity throughout the island.”
Another goal while designing was to make sure that travelers were also being educated while they were there. Usually, people arrive by seaplane or boat, and he wanted to make sure that the main character of the island was what people would see at the resort. He wanted travelers to leave with a sense of responsibility to care for the islands.
Unfortunately, the Maldives are very low-lying and are at serious risk of effects from climate change. Estimated from NASA say that the entire country could be fully underwater by the year 2050.
Kudadoo is the only fully solar-powered private island in the country. It is extremely important to consider Climate change when constructing new structures and consider the environment, which is exactly what Yamazaki did. We hope that other architects will follow his lead!
