Kumulus, a Tunisian startup, was co-founded by Iheb Triki after an eye-opening camping trip. Triki went on a four-day camping trip in the Tunisian desert with 100 liters of bottled water. But when they arrived, Triki noticed the number of bottles and the piles of empty plastic left by previous campers. Then, the next morning, he saw tiny drops of dew on the surface of his tent. That’s when the engineer had an idea.

Triki is the CEO of the startup Kumulus which developed a device that mimics the condensation process and converts humid air into drinking water. The machine, Kumulus 1, can produce anywhere from 10 to 50 liters of clean water per day, depending on the humidity levels in the air.

The machine takes the humid air through tiny openings on the top and passes it through a filter. Then, it’s cooled in a chamber, condensed, and turned to dew. The water is filtered again, mineralized, and stored in a water tank. There is a spout on the side that allows people to access the water and a screen that shows how much water is available.

There is even an app that alerts users when to change the filter and lets them monitor the water quality. Triki hopes to eventually make the machine so customizable that users can control what kind of minerals they want to add to their water.

Three divides are being tested, but just three weeks since its launch, the company already received more than 100 preorders worth around $700 million. The team is working on a smaller model that could fit in a car and produce water for short trips so that you can leave all that plastic behind. This could be a huge step toward helping the plastic pollution issue and providing clean water to those in need!
