Dogs and tennis balls look like a perfect match, but that classic fetch combo may not be as harmless as it seems. Some veterinarians say regular tennis balls can create real problems for pets, especially dogs that love to chew.
The biggest concern is dental wear. The fuzzy outer layer may seem soft, yet repeated chewing can slowly grind down tooth enamel. Over time, that can lead to painful dental issues and bigger health problems. On top of that, experts warn that tennis balls were made for sports, not for animals to gnaw on every day. That means the rubber, glue, and outer coating may contain materials you would never want your dog swallowing.
Thankfully, safer options exist. One veterinarian highlighted the Chuckit ultra ball as a better choice because it still gives dogs the bounce and excitement they love, but it is easier on their teeth. Other alternatives include airflow balls for flat faced breeds, covered toys that lower the risk of fuzz ingestion, and soft frisbees that are easier to catch and carry.

Just as important, pet parents need to choose the right size toy. A ball that is too small can become a choking hazard or get swallowed, which may lead to emergency treatment. So while fetch is still a great way to help dogs stay active, the toy itself matters more than many people realize.
A safer game of fetch protects your dog, supports a healthier environment for companion animals, and helps loving guardians make better choices. Please keep showing up for animals with kinder, smarter, and more conscious care.
