Veterinarians in California are warning about a growing outbreak of leptospirosis, a dangerous bacterial disease spreading among dogs in areas including the Bay Area and Los Angeles. Some dogs have already died. The infection spreads through contaminated water, mud, and soil, especially after rain when bacteria can survive in puddles for weeks. Because this disease can also infect humans, public health experts say stronger prevention measures are urgently needed. Sign the petition now to push officials to act quickly and expand vaccine access.
Leptospirosis attacks the kidneys and liver, often causing vomiting, lethargy, dehydration, and loss of appetite. Without treatment it can become fatal. The disease is also zoonotic, meaning people can become infected after exposure to contaminated environments or infected urine. Despite the risk, cases in animals are not consistently tracked across California, making outbreaks harder to monitor.
A safe vaccine already exists and can dramatically reduce transmission. Expanding access and awareness could save many dogs. Sign the petition now urging California health officials to prioritize vaccine distribution and prevent further suffering. Sign the petition now.
