Consumer Reports has recently conducted a study revealing the widespread presence of plasticizers, specifically phthalates, in various supermarket foods and fast-food products. Despite meeting regulatory limits, concerns arise as these chemicals, along with bisphenols, can potentially disrupt hormonal regulation, leading to various health risks.

In the study, 84 out of 85 tested supermarket foods and fast foods were found to contain phthalates, with 79% of samples also showing the presence of bisphenol A (BPA) and other bisphenols, though at lower levels compared to a 2009 study.
Among the tested products, Annie’s Organic Cheesy Ravioli, Del Monte sliced peaches, and Chicken of the Sea pink salmon exhibited elevated phthalate levels. Other popular items like Cheerios, Gerber baby food, Yoplait yogurt, and various burgers, nuggets, and fries from Wendy’s, Burger King, and McDonald’s were also found to contain these chemicals.
Consumer Reports noted variations in phthalate levels even among similar products. For instance, Wendy’s Crispy Chicken Nuggets had over four times the phthalate levels found in McDonald’s Chicken McNuggets, suggesting that there are ways to reduce the presence of these chemicals in foods.
Consumer Reports emphasized the need for a reassessment by regulatory bodies, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, regarding the safety of plasticizers. Despite the levels found being within existing limits, the lack of a confirmed safe threshold for phthalates raises concerns about their potential health impact.
