The Story of the Only Horse Sanctuary in Serbia

In Lapovo, Serbia lies the Staro Brdo Sanctuary, a symbol of compassion for the country’s horses. Founded in 2015 by the dedicated efforts of Zeljko Ilicic, this sanctuary stands as a testament to the power of one man’s love for horses and his commitment to their welfare.

Twelve years ago, Ilicic started a life-changing journey when he rescued his first horse from the brink of death. This pivotal moment ignited his passion and purpose, leading him to establish the Balkan country’s sole horse sanctuary. Over the years, Staro Brdo has welcomed around 80 horses, offering them refuge from abuse, neglect, and the harsh realities of life.

While authorities address the needs of stray dogs through shelters, horses are left without state-backed facilities. Staro Brdo Sanctuary operates on the generosity of donors, but Ilicic dreams of achieving self-sustainability through innovative initiatives like therapy riding.
