This horse named Moose was brought to Loran Elise Rescue by local authorities and was more than 600 pounds underweight when he arrived. He was so lethargic from malnutrition and could barely stand up and walk around on his own. Moose was so lucky to have been saved when he was because he had barely any fight left in him and was about ready to give up.

It is impossible to know whether this was a case of intentional animal abuse or ignorance. Many people buy larger animals without really understanding their needs and necessities. Either way, allowing animals to be so neglected is inexcusable.
“Seeing them come in like this always breaks my heart. But knowing how great they can be with the right care and love keep me going,” said Loran Elise Rescue.

Despite his heartbreaking circumstances and almost being starved to death, it has been less than a month since his rescue, and Moose is making incredible progress. Not only is he getting stronger every day, but he is now at a healthy weight and is loving his new home.
Alex Wildee, a field service investigator for the Humane Society, said, “Each species of animals have unique care requirements that must be met. As animal owners, it is our responsibility to understand and provide for these needs. Early reporting is incredibly important. This kind of neglect happens over a long period of time. It takes years for a horse’s hooves to get to this state. If you have a concern or you see a problem, call. Colorado Humane Society and local Law Enforcement are here to provide resources and educate our community.”
