The Body Shop is Speaking Out to Help End Animal Cosmetic Testing Forever

The Body Shop has just made a statement that it supports H.R. 4148, The Humane Cosmetics Act (also backed by celebrities!). Introduced by Rep. Jim Moran and backed by 41 co-sponsors, the bill would phase out animal testing in just one year, which would then be followed with a three-year phasing out of the retail sale of all animal-test cosmetics.

“The Body Shop is proud to Support H.R. 4148 The Humane Cosmetics Act,” said Chris Davis, The Body Shop’s international director of campaigns and corporate responsibility. “The Body Shop has been campaigning to ban animal testing in cosmetics and we’re immensely proud of the impact we have made in changing the law in the EU.  As a leader in the global beauty industry, we’d now like to see the U.S. end cosmetics testing on animals. The Humane Cosmetics Act would help harmonize international laws on this issue which is good for business and good for animals.”

Monica Engebretson,  North American Campaigns Manager for Cruelty Free International, stated, “We are delighted that The Body Shop has spoken out in Support of the Humane Cosmetics Act. They are much respected as a leading business voice against animal testing for cosmetics which is why Cruelty Free International is very pleased to work with them closely on our global mission to end all animal testing for cosmetics and personal care products.”

If you would like totake action on this matter, consider signing Cruelty Free International’s petition here, and/or asking your representative to become a co-sponsor on the bill here. Please join companies like The Body Shop in supporting this important act — the animals are depending on us!

  1. While I\’m happy that a large cosmetics brand is making a public declaration that will hopefully influence customers toward not financially supporting cruel and completely unnecessary animal cosmetics testing, and while I do acknowledge that the Body Shop has been active in this campaign for quite some time, the fact that the company is now part owned by L\’Oreal is troubling. L\’Oreal have never been advocates against animal cruelty or put any notable effort into morally sound decisions regarding the workings of their company and it both upsets and worries me that our options to purchase animal safe and environmentally safe cosmetics are now being slowly taken over by monstrously powerful coorperations who will reap the financial benefits of customers thinking that they are doing the right thing by purchasing "cruelty free". It\’s clear that L\’Oreal saw the financial gain by keeping up appearances and fulfilling this niche market through use of The Body Shop. The products themselves are still cruelty free but the company that our money goes to certainly is not, and the lack of transparency regarding this is obviously not an accident.

This is in no way a criticism of your website or your article – I love them both and support you wholeheartedly. But people should know what they\’re really supporting.
