A first-grade teacher in Fort Worth, Texas, found an unexpectedly heartwarming way to bring her pets into the classroom—without ever needing to leave the house. According to People, Madison Niederholtmeyer’s students had spent months begging to meet her beloved cats, Orzo and Ziti. The two-year-old brothers rarely leave the comfort of home, so Niederholtmeyer turned to technology for a creative solution.
Using Petlibro’s Granary Camera Feeder, a device that combines scheduled feedings with a livestream camera, she began projecting real-time video of the cats into her classroom. As a reward for good behavior, students could now watch Orzo and Ziti come running for snacks, triggered by the teacher’s phone.
The classroom erupted with delight. “They thought it was amazing,” Niederholtmeyer said. The cats became more than just pets—they were a fun, virtual reward system and a way to connect her home life to her teaching. She even shared the experience in a viral TikTok clip that’s since been viewed over 2 million times.
Beyond the cuteness, this wholesome story hints at a broader shift: technology can create low-impact, high-reward ways to bring animals into educational and therapeutic settings—without disrupting the animals’ routines or wellbeing. In a world where so many animals are bred or transported for human enjoyment, this example reminds us how meaningful virtual interactions can be when empathy and innovation come together.
Want to bring more compassion into classrooms or your own daily life? Start by questioning the way animals are used for entertainment and companionship. Seek kinder, more sustainable choices—like adopting, not shopping, and respecting animals’ boundaries. Tech can help, but kindness does the real work.
