A recent study revealed that men’s meaty diets are to blame for 40% more climate-heating emissions than women’s diets. It also showed that non-vegetarian diets created 59% more greenhouse gas emissions than vegetarian diets did.
This study goes hand in hand with other forms of evidence for the negative environmental impact of meat-eating countries, revealing that a meat-heavy diet is to blame for much of the current greenhouse gas emissions.
Meat wasn’t the only culprit, however. The study showed that dairy also had a huge environmental impact, especially when combined with a meat-heavy diet. A variety of drinks, sweets, and snacks also had a high percentage of greenhouse gases. Thus, the study showed the benefit of switching to a more whole foods plant-based diet that cuts out excessive junk food and snacks.
Scientists, led by Holly Rippin, at the University of Leeds, said, “We all want to do our bit to help save the planet. Working out how to modify our diets is one way we can do that. There are broad-brush concepts like reducing our meat intake, particularly red meat, but our work also shows that big gains can be made from small changes, like cutting out sweets.”
The study showed that even a flexitarian diet had a lower impact on climate-heating emissions as people made better food choices without being strictly vegan. This is why it is so important for everyone to do their part and try to make the best dietary decisions that they can.
The study also highlights the problem with the association that people make between eating meat and being manly. This kind of toxic masculinity directly harms the planet by encouraging men to consume foods that are responsible for increased GHG emissions.
Getting protein and other healthy, strength-building foods is completely possible on a plant-based diet. Hopefully, this generation will shift the narrative of what masculinity means to something kinder for both people and the planet.
