Three new studies were conducted by urologists to find the impacts of a plant-based diet on men’s general health. This can be a sensitive topic as many men fear going plant-based because they do not want to experience adverse side effects.

The studies mainly focused on PSA levels, a marker that can indicate prostate cancer. They showed that eating a mainly plant-based diet had lower levels of PSA than those eating a high meat diet.

Dr. Ramasamy said, “Traditionally, men have thought that lots of protein, specifically animal protein, was necessary to maintain testosterone levels and indirectly related to maintaining erectile function.”

Dr. Mouzannar said, “Studies have shown that more aggressive prostate cancer can be associated with high meat intake. In addition, there is growing evidence that animal-based food has been associated with greenhouse emissions and all-cause mortality risk. Several other publications suggest that fruits and vegetables may have a protective effect against prostate cancer.”

Other studies done by the urologists targeted the erectile benefits of a plant-based diet. But they found no obvious changes or improvements.

The key takeaway from these studies is that a high meat diet has been linked to prostate cancer because this is a very common fear amongst many men. By adopting a plant-based diet or even a mainly plant-based diet, men can improve their prostate health without any significant side effects.
