According to CBS News, inhalers commonly used to treat asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are releasing greenhouse gases equivalent to the annual emissions of over 530,000 cars. Researchers, publishing their findings in the Journal of the American Medical Association, estimate that U.S. inhalers generated 24.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent from 2014 to 2024.
The study highlights that metered-dose inhalers — the traditional boot-shaped devices most people recognize — are responsible for about 98% of these emissions. The main culprit isn’t the medication itself but the hydrofluoroalkane propellants inside, potent greenhouse gases also found in aerosol sprays. These chemicals significantly contribute to Global warming and, ironically, can worsen the same respiratory health conditions the inhalers aim to treat.
Lead author Dr. William Feldman of UCLA explained that “inhalers add to the growing carbon footprint of the U.S. healthcare system, putting many patients with chronic respiratory disease at risk.” Yet, he emphasized that alternatives exist — including dry powder and soft mist inhalers, which deliver medication effectively without harmful propellants.
With 28 million Americans living with asthma and another 34 million with chronic lung disease, the findings underscore how deeply connected personal health and the environment are. As Climate change worsens air quality, it not only triggers more respiratory illness but also increases reliance on treatments that, in turn, exacerbate Global warming — a vicious feedback loop scientists are urging the medical community to break.
Transitioning to lower-emission inhalers, along with wider awareness of their environmental impact, could help reduce Pollution and protect both patients and the planet. Choosing sustainable healthcare options is one more way we can all breathe a little easier — for ourselves, for others, and for the Earth.
