Australia’s first National Climate Risk Assessment was recently released, highlighting how global heating will affect the nation’s environment, economy, and daily life. But instead of engaging with the science, News Corp’s Daily Telegraph branded the report “science fiction,” leaning on the views of a single U.S.-based political scientist known for minimizing climate impacts. According to The Guardian, experts say this framing ignores the evidence and misleads the public at a time when urgent action is needed.

The risk assessment modeled scenarios at 1.5°C, 2°C, and 3°C of warming, which scientists stress are “very real.” Dismissing these as fantasy, critics argue, undermines serious work by Australia’s top climatologists and the UN’s own findings. As Professor Christian Jakob put it, “It would have been irresponsible not to assess the risks at that level of warming.”

This is not the first time the tabloid has targeted renewable energy. Stories warning of “solar rubbish piling up” ignored the fact that 95% of panels can be recycled and that schemes are already in development to manage waste. Claims that wind turbines pose a danger to firefighting aircraft were also debunked by fire experts, who pointed out that pilots already operate safely around obstacles worldwide.

These narratives echo a familiar pattern: casting doubt on renewable solutions while downplaying the dangers of fossil fuels. Yet evidence shows that embracing clean energy, reducing meat consumption, and supporting plant-based systems are critical steps for protecting both public health and animals.

The climate crisis is not science fiction. It is happening now, and misleading coverage only delays solutions. By trusting credible science and supporting renewable energy, we can push back against denial and move toward a safer, sustainable future.
