Thousands of Greyhounds Are Abused and Killed in the Racing Industry – Take Action to Stop This!

The life of a racing greyhound may seem perfectly good and happy, maybe even privileged – to be an athlete in the world of dogs, praised and awarded like a sportsperson, does not sound alarming. But, unfortunately, that is very far from the truth and the pretty vision dissolves as soon as we learn about what the reality of what greyhounds face in the racing industry.

Greyhound racing, like most other industries that exploit animals, is purely driven by profit. Racing greyhounds typically spend more than 20 hours a day in crates that are stacked one on top of another. They are muzzled for extended periods of time and tend not to receive normal social contact nor adequate medical care at the race tracks. Even cases of dog deaths at the racing tracks are not at all rare and serious injuries are common.

When greyhounds are no longer useful as racers – which happens after the dogs are just five years old – they can retire and find a forever home – but that is the lucky scenario. Most often, their fate is death or breeding. According to a Care2 petition from Grey2K USA Worldwide, in Australia, as many as 17,000 young and perfectly healthy dogs are killed every year – and that is just for one country.

This inhumane and senseless treatment of animals has no right to exist and thrive. Commercial greyhound racing now exists in eight countries and at almost 150 tracks. It is currently legal in Australia, China (SAR of Macau), Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, Vietnam, the U.K., and the U.S. This easily translates into tens of thousands of dogs being abused, kept in unacceptable condition, deprived of medical care, drugged, starved, and finally, frightfully often, killed for no reason whatsoever.
