Steve-O, who shot to fame as part of the “Jackass” team, has emerged as an unlikely champion for animal rights in recent years after collaborating on a video with Farm Sanctuary called “What Came Before,” which exposed the horrendous conditions that factory farmed animals must endure.
And now, he has used his influence to raise awareness about the plight of captive marine animals … by climbing to the top of an enormous crane in Hollywood, CA. Hey, that’s nothing compared to some of the crazy tricks he pulled on “Jackass,” right?
Steve-O initially alerted fans to his planned climb on Saturday, by posting an Instagram photo of himself holding an inflatable killer whale to announce a “dangerous stunt.” At 7.24 p.m. on Sunday, he posted a second photo of himself on the crane at 6000 West Selma Avenue. You can’t accuse the man of lacking style – at one point, he was planning to set off fireworks!
His stunt attracted plenty of attention from police and fire officials, who responded by preparing an air rescue cushion for him and negotiating with him to get down from the crane. He eventually returned to solid ground at about 8.30 p.m. The above video, recorded by Steve-O, details his jaw-dropping stunt. Watch it … and be amazed.
While Steve-O’s certainly send a message to SeaWorld, it’s important to remember that he is a professional (no matter how ridiculous he may be) and we don’t encourage you to try and go to these same lengths to have your opinions on SeaWorld heard. There are many thing you can do to help advocate for captive whales, one of the most pertinent being boycotting marine parks at all costs. When people stop paying to fund see marine animals in tanks, the business will no longer be profitable. Sure, refusing to attend a marine park might not be as dramatic as climbing a crane – but in the long run, it will have just as a profound impact.
