Petroleum-based plastics cause huge problems for the health of the planet and people alike. Derived from nasty chemicals, these plastics leach into our food and water and have been linked to various forms of cancer, disease, and infertility. Not to mention the fact that plastics are littering our oceans, taking up space in landfills, and generally polluting our planet.
Lucky for us, 16 year-old Elif Bilgin has found a solution to our petroleum-based plastic problem…bio-plastic made from banana peels! Elif spent the past two years working on her bio-plastic, creating the perfect formula to turn leftover banana peels into a durable and incredibly versatile material. The process she used is so simple that anyone can make this bio-plastic in their own home. How cool is that?
Elif has been awarded the “Science in Action Award” by Scientific American for her amazing work. Whoever thought kids were too young to solve the world’s problems clearly has never heard about Elif Bilgin.
