Anxiety is one of the most common challenges people face today, creeping into daily routines and overwhelming even quiet moments. But it doesn’t have to control every part of life. Recently, Upworthy asked nearly 2,000 people to share what actually helps them manage anxiety, and the responses revealed something hopeful: many of the best solutions come from connecting with nature, animals, movement, and simple acts of care. According to GOOD, people turn to everything from walking dogs to trimming plants as powerful tools for restoring balance.

Nature topped the list for many. Walking among trees, rowing at sunrise, or gardening offered a grounding reminder of the Earth’s calming presence. Spending time outdoors isn’t just soothing for mental health — it also strengthens our connection to the environment we rely on. Animals also play a huge role in comfort. People described snuggling with their dogs, cuddling parrots, or simply watching birds as ways to ease stress and find joy. For those living a vegan or plant-based lifestyle, these stories highlight how respecting and caring for animals can also nurture our own well-being.

Movement was another common theme, with activities like running, yoga, and dancing helping people release tension stored in the body. Others found relief in creative outlets such as painting or music, or in everyday rituals like baking, cleaning, or organizing. Even laughter, whether from funny videos or conversations with friends, offered a much-needed reset. And for some, the answer was as simple as sleep — giving the body and mind time to rest and reset.

The responses serve as a reminder that anxiety may never fully disappear, but there are countless ways to soften its grip. Whether through a mindful walk, a cuddle with a pet, or a plant-based meal that supports both your health and the planet, small choices can build resilience and peace.

Taking care of yourself doesn’t have to be complicated — align with what soothes you, nurture the environment, and let compassion guide the way.
