If you’ve ever felt ignored by your cat when calling its name, you’re not alone. But now science has your back. A new study out of Paris-Nanterre University, published in Animal Cognition and reported by Brian Foster for Glass Almanac, has found a surprisingly simple way to catch your cat’s attention—and it’s not just about saying “here kitty kitty.”

The researchers observed feline responses in a cat café environment to better understand what works (and what doesn’t) when trying to engage with a cat, especially one that’s unfamiliar. The most effective method? Using a combination of visual gestures and vocal calls. Cats were far more likely to respond when humans used both together—like waving a hand while calling their name—compared to just speaking or gesturing alone.

Interestingly, French cats seemed to respond well to the “pff pff” sound, a common local technique similar to the “pspsps” used in the U.S. But no matter the sound, the takeaway was clear: cats are more receptive when humans use their whole body to communicate, not just their voice.

The study also revealed that ignoring a cat altogether could actually stress them out. When humans avoided interacting, cats showed more tail flicks—often a sign of anxiety. So even if you’re not in the mood to cuddle, it’s still important to acknowledge your feline friend’s presence.

Let’s treat our pets with the care they deserve. Whether you’re a lifelong cat guardian or just animal-curious, remember that being mindful of an animal’s comfort and communication needs is a small but meaningful step toward a more compassionate world.
