Cat People Are Smarter According to Science and It Might Explain a Lot

According to a 2014 study from Carroll University, shared in a YourTango article by Tabitha Blaisdell, the age-old divide between cat people and dog people runs deeper than cute Instagram photos.

Researchers surveyed 600 college students about their pet preferences and found some telling trends. About 60% of participants said they preferred dogs, while only 11% chose cats — but it’s not just about popularity. The study revealed that those who identified as cat people scored higher on intelligence tests. They were also more introverted, open-minded, sensitive, and independent — traits often associated with non-conformists and deep thinkers.

In contrast, dog lovers were found to be more outgoing, energetic, and people-oriented. They often described themselves as enthusiastic and lively — mirroring the pack-loving, playful nature of dogs. These findings align with previous research from the University of Texas in 2010, which also highlighted personality contrasts, noting dog lovers were more extroverted and conscientious, while cat lovers were more neurotic and open to new experiences.

While the debate may never be settled, one thing is clear: whether you’re curling up with a book and a cat or heading to the park with your dog, your pet choice says a lot about you — and could even help you find your next best friend or partner.
